Skin Cancer Screening and Surgery
Skin cancer surgery in the face can leave scars that may be noticeable. If you have a history of skin cancer (Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma or Melanoma) we recommend a yearly check-up to detect new cancers early - when they are still small.
If skin cancer is detected in the face, especially in cosmetically sensitive areas around the eyes, nose, lips or ears, the best surgery approach is "Mohs micrographic surgery". Only Mohs surgeons have the training to minimize the excision defect, because they can trace the tumor in the excised tissue under the microscope. Because the tissue is checked immediately, no "safety margin" of healthy skin has to be removed, the tissue does not have to be sent out to a lab to establish that all the cancer was removed, and the wound can be repaired immediately in the cosmetically best fashion.
Skin cancer surgery is almost always covered by insurance. If cosmetic outcome is of highest concern, we recommend to have the surgery done by a cosmetic surgeon who has been Mohs trained.
